Public Interest Advocacy Centre

Who are we?
We are galvanising community support to raise the age of criminal responsibility in NSW. We need to invest in community capacity to support children and families, rather than rely on ineffective and harmful punitive responses.
Jonathon Hunyor, PIAC CEO
Public Interest Advocacy Centre
The Public Interest Advocacy Centre (PIAC) is an independent, non-profit law and policy centre. We work to make society fairer and stronger by changing laws, policies and practices that create injustice and inequality.
What are we doing?

We are lobbying the NSW Government to change the law so children under 14 cannot be sent to prison.

PIAC: Raise the Age NSW

The NSW Raise the Age coalition is working to raise the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 14. Locking up and criminalising children makes them more likely to offend again and causes lifelong harm. PIAC is working in collaboration with partners including First Nations organisations, children’s advocates and medical experts to deliver this urgent change to our laws.‍
