Top End Women's Legal Service

Who are we?
Top End Women's Legal Service
The Top End Women’s Legal Service (‘TEWLS’) is a not-for-profit, specialist women’s legal service focused on the advancement of women’s rights. We provide integrated, holistic, trauma-informed and culturally secure free legal and support services to women, and persons identifying as women, living in the Top End of the NT. TEWLS provides services in the areas of family, migration and civil law, with specific expertise held in respect of domestic, family and sexual violence (‘DFSV’). TEWLS also provides community legal education and input on law and policy development to redress power imbalances and address violence and gender inequality. TEWLS services regional, rural and remote communities providing essential front-end legal services.
What are we doing?

Scaling up of specialist and integrated legal and support services

We will scale up innovative and place-based services to women who are experiencing/are at risk of DFSV; in particular, to women seeking refuge at the Darwin Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women’s Shelter Indigenous Corporation ('DAIWS') and women incarcerated at the Darwin Correctional Centre ('DCC'). TEWLS has a longstanding and demonstrated commitment to delivering onsite legal and support services to women at these specified locations, prefaced on increasing safety and building relationships. TEWLS currently delivers legal outreach services at 12 locations, including at all four women’s shelters in the Greater Darwin region (including DAIWS), and the DCC.
