Since opening in 2022 as a dedicated community precinct for social purpose, Yirranma Place has played an important role as a welcoming space where people from diverse backgrounds can gather to share knowledge, innovate and work together to help address some of the significant challenges facing Australia today.
Community is at the heart of the work that happens here, and we are proud to have become a local hub for our own neighbourhood of Darlinghurst through residents gathering at the Two Good Co café, visiting Yirranma Place’s art exhibition, or enjoying a recital from the building’s restored historic organ.
The friendly hospitality of the Two Good Co café - a social enterprise that trains and employs women who have experienced domestic violence and homelessness – has been central to creating the sense of warmth and opportunity that fills Yirranma Place.
Over the course of the past three years, as we have settled into the premises, we have identified a small number of low-impact ways that Yirranma Place operations can better support both Two Good Co, and for-purpose partners, to meet their organisational needs. These needs were not initially identified but have emerged as we have evolved.
To that end, Paul Ramsay Foundation (PRF) has been asked to seek five operational changes that require a new Development Application, and an update to the Plan of Management.
These changes will, among other things, allow more organisations with a social or community purpose to have improved access to, and benefit from, the space at Yirranma Place, while maintaining respect for neighbourhood amenity. As a unique inner city social-purpose precinct, Yirranma Place has the capacity to generate an even greater impact for the benefit of children, families, and the local community.
After an early discussion roundtable with some neighbours, the initial proposal was refined based on their feedback ahead of broader community consultation. As part of the feedback, we undertook monitoring of the tenant, visitor and event-related travel activity at Yirranma Place, including how attendees arrive and depart. This information is documented as part of our submission to Council, on behalf of our neighbours.
This revised proposal was shared via a detailed neighbourhood newsletter, digital updates, and a community drop-in session which was advertised via newsletter and several other channels.
We remain committed to close engagement with our neighbours and community, and look forward to sharing our precinct for social purpose with the Darlinghurst neighbourhood for generations to come.
